The Great Plains of North Dakota
Sitting on the Missouri Plateau, next to the Missouri River,
Bismarck was founded in 1872 and has been the capital of North
Dakota since it became a state in 1889. The state capitol
building is the tallest one in the city and is the center of it.
The second most populated city in North Dakota, the city sits
upon the Great Plains, between the Rocky Mountains and the Great
Lakes. It has manufacturing facilities, health care and retail trade
making it the largest economic center in south-central North
Dakota. This central location has helped with the city's growing
and economic stimulation. Originally named "Edwinton", in 1873, the name was
changed to honor the then chancellor of Germany in hopes of
attracting German settlers to the area. With the gold discovery
in the nearby Black Hills, the population began to grow.
The railroad has played a large part in the growth of the area
and influx of immigrants looking for vast farmland and rich
loam.
Situated by the great Missouri River helps
the economy by being an exciting recreational area both for the
residents and the visitors coming. It holds so much
history, beauty and charm, that many people spend a lot of time
on and beside the swift flowing river. There are many
areas of interests, opportunities and sights for everyone that
you would need to go to Bismarck to thoroughly enjoy all that
the city, the river and the Great Plains have to offer.
Travel to west to enjoy the old, the new and the ever changing
environment that makes up this magnificent country.
